What is replacing RecPark’s 50-meter pool destroyed in Helene?

Part 2, the Asheville area pool issue! Prompted by Kathy Rice

Hey Swimmers-

The City of Asheville has recently issued a proposed design for Azalea Park–including rebuilding a competition pool further away from the Swannanoa River.  In the artist’s rendition of the new park, the pool appears to be a 25 yard, likely 6 lane pool, with a separate smaller pool nearby, probably for kids/lessons/etc.  I can’t find specifications for the new pool, but it doesn’t appear that the proposed pool would be Olympic sized, which is 50-meters and 8-lanes wide, and that width could be 25-yards or 25-meters.

The old RecPark pool on Azalea Drive, destroyed during Helene, 2024.

The City is currently soliciting comments on the design.  I would like to see them replace the olympic pool with an olympic pool — Asheville is very short on available pools and to lose out on what was a real asset to the City would be a real shame.

You can see the City’s plans here:

If you agree they should replace the old Olympic pool with a new Olympic sized pool, please click on this link and write and send a comment to the City!  The more people they hear from, the better!
